TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State swimming and diving teams begin its 2008-09 season on Friday, October 3, at 5:00 p.m. when the Seminole men and women take on Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton, Fla. The women will also compete against Florida International.
“I think that it is important for our kids to get going and not have to swim against each other,” FSU head coach Neil Harper said. “It’s time to start racing some other teams and to come together as one and we need to set the tone for the year. This is an opportunity for us to compete against two competitive teams and I’m excited to find out what this team is made of on the road.”
On Saturday, the women’s swimming and diving team will head to Coral Gables, Fla., to take on ACC rival Miami and Florida Gulf Coast at 10:00 a.m. The men’s diving team will join the women to compete against the Hurricanes who boast two National Champions as well as a pair of Olympians that will provide an early test for the divers.
“We’re really excited to go down to south Florida,” FSU diving coach Patrick Jeffrey said. “I think this is the best time to dive against a team like Miami because we’ve got a good shot of bumping it up a notch and catching them off-guard.”
FSU began its season with the annual Garnet vs. Gold meet and look to build off of the strong performance shown at the scrimmage. At the first dual meet of the year, Harper will look for which Seminoles will step up early in the season.
“We’ll check the results, but there is usually someone who goes out and swims a best time,” Harper said. “We’ll see what they’re made of this weekend and what we’re looking for is heart, desire and Seminole spirit.”
