Tallahassee, Fla. – For the second consecutive year, Florida State opened the 2008 campaign with an eight-run rule game as the Seminoles took an 11-3 victory over Southern Miss in six innings on day one of the Early Bird Tournament (Feb. 8). For head coach JoAnne Graf that
The victory went to sophomore Terese Gober who matched her career high strikeouts with 10 after five innings and allowed only one earned run on two hits with two walks. Taking the loss for Southern Miss was Samantha Davis as the Golden Eagles end the day 1-1.
Eight of nine Florida State’s lineup recorded runs with four Seminoles notching two apiece. Senior Whitney Buckmon went 3-for-4 with a career-tying two runs while bringing her career total stolen bases to 46 with one against SMU.
Leading the batters was freshman Ashley Stager who went 3-for-3 with two runs and one RBI in her debut game. Fellow fresh face Allison Collins made a statement as she pounded her first homerun as a Seminole, finished the game 3-for-2 with one run and three RBI’s.
Senior Brittany Osmon went 2-for-4 and tied Collins with three RBI’s and two runs scored.
Florida State got off to a commanding lead as four runs would score before the second inning. Buckmon started off the scoring for the Seminoles followed by junior Jessica Gilmore who got on base on an error by the short stop. Stager and Osmon would round out the scoring in the first inning.
The runs would come in fours again as the fifth inning was underway. Stager hit a double with one out on the board and would score the first run of the inning as Osmon advanced to second on the throw. Sophomore catcher Robin Ahrberg would also get to second on the throw, bringing up Collins with runners on second and third. A homerun down the left field line drove in three RBI’s and the Seminoles would end the inning with an 8-1 lead.
Entering the lineup for Gober at the top of the sixth was freshman pitcher Sarah Hamilton. Southern Miss scored two earned runs off the Tallahassee native in the top of the sixth, but the Seminoles answered with three runs to end the game early. Buckmon would once again get on base as the lead-off hitter with a singled bunt, then 2007’s ACC Rookie of the Year Monica Montez drew a walk. A single by Gilmore would advance Buckmon and Montez as a single by Stager brought in the first RBI. With runners on second a third, a fly out to centerfield by Osmon would bring in Montez and advance Gilmore who would score the winning run on an error by SMU’s short stop Kristin Chaney.
