TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – The Florida State softball team will be part of a groundbreaking day at Embry-Riddle this weekend as it faces the aeronautical university’s inaugural softball team on Saturday, Oct. 13 in an exhibition beginning at 6 p.m. at the Embry-Riddle Softball Stadium in Daytona Beach, Fla.
For Embry-Riddle, it will be its first action against outside competition and signifies a momentous day for the newfound program. Florida State will play a key part in Embry-Riddle’s Homecoming weekend, as the Seminoles also play a game on Sunday at 3 p.m. against Florida Tech.
Prior to Florida State’s game against the Embry-Riddle Eagles on Saturday, the ERAU Athletic Department will celebrate the officiate start of its softball program with a Grand Opening of the softball stadium. The festivities begin at 5:45 p.m. and include a ribbon-cutting ceremony prior to the first pitch.
Following Florida State’s game against Embry-Riddle, fans will have an opportunity to get autographs and photos with players from both teams. On Saturday and Sunday, the Wings and Waves Air Show will take place from 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. along the Daytona Beach shoreline.
“This is really going to be a spectacular weekend,” head coach Lonni Alameda said. “We’re happy to be a part of this commemorative weekend for Embry-Riddle, and it’s pretty neat that we will be the first team the program opens up against even though it is an exhibition. We’re ready to meet a lot of fans and have a lot of fun, and I know our coaching staff and players have been looking forward to this for a while.”
Florida State finished No. 22 in the final ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll last season. The Seminoles achieved an overall record of 47-16, their highest win total since finishing 62-12 in 2004. Florida State now has a total of 29 seasons with 40 or more victories, and is one just 11 programs that has made the NCAA postseason in every year since 2000.
Following the Seminoles’ trip to Daytona Beach, Florida State will play host to a couple entertaining home games against Georgia on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Seminoles and Bulldogs play a doubleheader beginning at noon and approximately 2 p.m. at JoAnne Graf Field.
