Aug. 15, 2001

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The annual home-and-home series against national champion Duke, a grudge-match against Florida in Gainesville, Northwestern in the third annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge and seven non-conference home games highlight Florida State University’s men’s basketball schedule as released by head coach Steve Robinson.

The Seminoles will play 13 games against teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament last season including the national champion Blue Devils and national semifinalist Maryland. Duke, which defeated Arizona in the national championship game, opens the Seminoles’ January portion of their ACC schedule on Jan. 6 in the Tallahassee Leon County Civic Center. Florida State opens its conference schedule on Dec. 16 at Wake Forest. The Seminoles travel to play Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Feb. 7.

“We are looking forward to the challenges of our schedule which will allow us to be competitive throughout the season,” said head coach Steve Robinson. “We are extremely excited about building on the foundation that we put in place last season and feel that this schedule will help us to continue to improve as a basketball team.”

Florida, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, serves as the regular season opening opponent for the Seminoles for the second consecutive season. The Seminoles have won three of the last six meetings against the Gators since 1995 with 2001 marking the 11th consecutive season the in-state rivals are scheduled to play each other.

Florida State faces Northwestern in the third annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Nov. 28 in Evanston, Ill. The Seminoles defeated Northwestern, 60-46, Dec. 1, 1999 in the inaugural ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Florida State leads the all-time series against Northwestern by a 2-0 margin. Including the Seminoles’ victory over the Wildcats in the 1999 ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Florida State defeated Northwestern, 91-73, Dec. 23, 1972.

On Jan. 26, Florida State travels to play Maryland, which advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament last season. The Terrapins make their return trip to Tallahassee Feb. 27. T
the Seminoles defeated then No. 17 Maryland last season in College Park. Florida State plays host to NCAA Tournament teams North Carolina (Jan. 16), Wake Forest (Feb. 2), Virginia (Feb. 20) and Georgia Tech (March 2) at the Leon County Civic Center during the season.

Florida State begins its home schedule playing host to Savannah State (Nov. 20) and Elon College (Nov. 23) during the month of November. The Seminoles play host to six games in December including match-ups with Birmingham Southern (Dec. 4), Western Carolina (Dec. 8), Cleveland State (Dec. 19), American (Dec. 22), Virginia Tech (Dec. 27) and Campbell (Dec. 29). Florida State plays its final non-conference regular season game at South Florida (Jan. 2).

The Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament is March 7-10 at the Charlotte Coliseum in Charlotte, N.C.
