TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – Al Thornton scored 20 points to lead Florida State to a 73-59 victory over Illinois State Monday, the second day of the Colonial Classic.
Thornton sat out most of the first half with two fouls and made 18 of his points for the Seminoles (2-0) in the second half. Meanwhile, Illinois State’s Dominitrix Johnson scored 32 points.
The did not have a field goal until the 15:27 mark of the first half, and were down by as many as ten points before climbing back to take a 31-24 halftime lead.
Led by Thornton, Florida State found its touch in the second half. Johnson’s 21 second half points kept the game close until Thornton’s two free throws and his break away dunk sealed the game.
Johnson made seven 3-pointers and was the only Redbird in double figures. The two teams combined to turn the ball over 53 times.
