Florida State Track And Field Teams Prepare For Two Weekend Meets

March 3, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida State track and field teams will be
competing in two separate events this weekend including the first outdoor
meet of the season. Select members of the men’s and women’s teams will be
heading to the USATF Indoor Championships in Atlanta March 3rd and 4th
while the rest of the team will be hosting the Snowbird Invitational at
Mike Long Track in Tallahassee March 4th. The Snowbird Invitational marks
the start of the outdoor season and is the first of four meets that will
take place at Mike Long Track.

Lady Seminoles Tonya Carter, Chinette Johnson, and Makiba Batten
will make the trip to Atlanta to compete in USATF Indoor Championships. All
three have had strong indoor seasons and are looking to keep the momentum
going heading into next week’s NCAA Indoor Championships. Carter has
already posted NCAA Automatic Qualifying times in the 55m and 60m dash and
is a two time ACC Champion with crowns in the 60m and 200m runs. Carter’s
time of 7.15 in the 60m at the ACC Indoor Championships ranks as the
seventh fastest mark in the world this year.

Sophomore Makiba Batten will head to Atlanta looking to post an
Automatic Qualifying score in the shot put despite winning the ACC
Championship in that event. Her mark of 48’04.50″ was good enough to win
the ACC crown but she is still shy of an automatic bid to the NCAA Indoor
Championships. Chinette Johnson has already posted a NCAA Provisional
Qualifying mark in the triple jump but will be looking to improve her marks
in the long jump and high jump in Atlanta this weekend. The junior from
Tallahassee has the best high jump mark for the Lady Seminoles this year
and finished fourth in the long jump at the Florida Intercollegiate.

Michael Jennings, Joe Allen, Antonio Martin, and Daniel Smith will
represent the Florida State men’s team at the USATF Championships. Joe
Allen heads to Atlanta as the reigning ACC Champion in the long jump and
triple jump and has posted NCAA Provisional Qualifying marks in both of
those events. Senior Michael Jennings has posted the fastest time on the
team this season in the 200m and 400m dash and the second fastest time in
the 800m. Jennings travels to Atlanta in the hopes of posting NCAA
Automatic Qualifying times in all three events.

Antonio Martin had strong showings in the 400m and 800m runs this
season including a fourth place finish in the 400m at the Air Force
Invitational. The freshman from Oviedo, FL is looking to improve his times
in both of these events. Senior Daniel Smith also heads to the USATF Indoor
Championships in hopes of improving his season best time of 48.24 in the
400m dash.

The Florida State track and field teams will be competing in the
NCAA Championships at the University of Arkansas, March 10th and 11th, and
at the FAMU Relays, March 11th in Tallahassee.
