Florida State Travels To ACC Championships This Weekend

Oct. 29, 2008

Tallahassee Florida State‘s cross country teams will travel to compete at the 2008 ACC Championships this weekend. University of North Carolina will play host to the other eleven conference schools hitting the ground running at the Finley Complex in Chapel Hill, N.C. on November 1.

Coming off of a first place finish at the NCAA Pre-National meet, the women are looking to continue their success thus far this season and bring home another title. At last year’s championships, Florida State women’s cross country took the top spot for the first time in school history.

“The team is looking good and healthy which is half the battle,” said women’s head coach Karen Harvey. “Our goals are not to underestimate the difficulty of the course and competition. The biggest thing I have challenged the team with is to run better than Pre-Nationals and to concentrate on the process and not the outcome.”

Junior All-American Susan Kuijken (Nijmegen, Netherlands) will be leading the Seminoles at this year’s 6K run. At last year’s race, Kuijken crossed the finish line in 20:23.5 to finish first and beat out her nearest competitor by 13 seconds.

“I think the competition for the individual title is going to be fierce,” said Harvey. “Susan tested herself early at Pre-Nationals partly in preparation for this race.”

On the men’s front, senior Luke Gunn (Forest Gate, England) is expected to lead the Seminoles at this year’s 8K race. The Seminoles have placed second four times out of the last five years and are anxious to continue their upward track.

“We are really excited about this weekend,” said men’s head coach Bob Braman. “We are going to come in as the under dog with a chance to win the title. We are the healthiest we have been in the last month and have all our top runners ready to go.”

The men’s cross country team will look to take the title this year for the first time in school history. With healthy runners and a well knowledge coach, the Seminoles have a chance to put their names in the history books for Florida State men’s cross country team.

“Our guys are excited by the chance of taking the title this year,” said Braman. “We are hungry to take a crack at it this weekend.”
