TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The United States captured the gold medal at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Chile with a 2-1 victory over Korea DPR on Sunday. The U.S. found the back of the net twice in the first half and held on for the one-goal victory over the defending U-20 champions.

Sydney Leroux (23rd minute) and Alex Morgan were the goal scorers for the U.S. in the championship game including Morgan’s game-winner in the 42nd minute. Korea DPR out shot the United States 15-9 in the game, but the U.S. defense turned in a tremendous effort forcing the Koreans into a lot of long range shots.

Seminole junior Becky Edwards played all 90 minutes in the gold medal match as she made her fifth start of the tournament for Team USA. This marks the third medal for the Edwards in international competition over the last two years. Earlier this year, she captured a silver medal at the CONCACAF Qualifier in Mexico, while earning her second silver medal with the U.S. at the 2007 Pan-Am Games.

The U.S. triumph also capped a remarkable year for the U.S. Women’s National Team programs, which advanced to the championship game of all three FIFA women’s tournaments this year, winning the 2008 Olympics and finishing second at the 2008 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The victory for the U-20s makes the United States the first country to win two women’s world titles in the same calendar year.

The USA won the first-ever FIFA U-19 Women’s World Cup in 2002, took third in 2004, and finished fourth at the first U-20 Women’s World Cup in 2006.

In the third place match also held on Sunday, Germany defeated France 5-3.
