Tallahassee, FL – The Florida State women’s tennis team (12-4, 2-0 ACC) upset the higher-ranked Virginia Cavaliers (9-5, 0-1 ACC), 6-1 in at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center in Charlottesville, VA. The Cavaliers are ranked No. 43 while the Seminoles, also upsetting No. 50 Maryland yesterday, sit at No. 53.

Junior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) won her 16th match, continuing to set the school record for consecutive singles matches won. The record was held dually by Kia Asberg (1999) and Marina Raic (1999) with 14 before Moldovan broke it in a match against Michigan State on March 8.

The Tribe started the day with a win in the doubles area. Moldovan and freshman Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham) posted a win in the top spot, besting Bruch/Fritz-Krockow, 8-5. At the number two position, senior Anca Dumitrescu (Bucharest, Romania/VCU) and newcomer Lindsay Deason (St. Petersburg, FL/Boca Raton Prep) took the victory at the two position, besting James/Stough 9-7. Posting a win at the three spot, seniors Brooke Cordell (Soddy Daisy, TN/Tennessee) and Christina Denny (Canton, OH/Bradenton Academy) beat Hammond/Bechliwanis, 8-3.

Florida State continued to put points on the board winning the first five singles matches. Dumitrescu tallied a score of 6-3, 6-1 over Fritz-Krockow while Denny won in straight sets over Bruch, 6-1, 6-3. At the four and five positions, Deason bested Marta Bechliwanis 7-6, 6-3 while Clarke posted her ninth singles victory of the season, against Dora Bechliwanis, 7-6, 6-0.

The Seminoles will play again on Saturday, March 20, 2004 at N.C. State in Raleigh, N.C. at 11:00 a.m.
