Florida State (7-3, 0-0) battled LSU in the nightcap of the FSU Invitational held at Tully Gymnasium Friday, September 20th. Although the Seminoles fell in game one, they were able to fight back to defeat the Tigers by a score 3-2 (22-30, 30-24, 30-24, 27-30, 15-13). The Seminoles improve to 7-3 with the victory, while LSU falls to 6-3.
The Tigers got off to a strong start in game one as they defeated FSU, 30-22. After falling in game one, Florida State regrouped in the second and third games to beat LSU 30-24 on both occasions. The squad from Baton Rouge would not surrender as they came back to defeat the Seminoles in game four by a score of 30-27. The match would be decided in the fifth and final game. The Seminoles took an early 2-0 lead and never looked back in game five, defeating the Tigers 15-13.
Seniors Kristin Frye and Erica Bunch led the Seminoles past the Tigers. Frye recorded 21 kills, five digs and hit .545 on the evening. Bunch tallied a match-high 26 kills and hit .360 against the Tigers. Senior outside-hitter Alex Sevillano had another strong performance for the Seminoles as she notched 17 kills, seven digs, two block assists and hit .364. Junior Jennifer Anderson contributed to the Florida State effort with 71 assists and one service ace. Sophomore sensation Aisha Carr hit .600 with seven kills on 10 attacks and one error.
Two LSU players had double-doubles against FSU. Jennifer Hampton, who recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 13 digs, led the Tigers. Hampton also had one service ace, two solo blocks and one block assist. Katie Kubena tallied 10 kills, 50 assists, two service aces and hit .600. Lauren Cuyler hit .500 as she had 18 kills on 32 attacks.
Florida State’s next match is scheduled for Saturday, September 21st, when the Seminoles will face the Bears of Brown University. The Bears enter the match with a record of 1-4. Brown fell to LSU (3-0) and Louisiana-Lafayette (3-0) in matches held on September 20th.
