Gainesville, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team came out strong against its first ranked opponent of the season, the No. 6 Florida Gators. The Seminoles took game one, but the Gators took the match 3-1 (30-24, 11-30, 21-30, 21-30) at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in Gainesville, Fla.
The Seminoles, now 3-3 for the season, have been unable to take the match in the part 16 consecutive meeting against the undefeated Gators (6-0).
The first game of the night showcased a strong Florida State squad, matching Florida point-for-point for the first four plays. It was a kill by freshman Lauren Rosenthal (Colorado Springs, Col.) that changed the pace and gave the Seminoles the lead, holding the Gators at five. Florida was unable to regain its composure as a service ace by Rosenthal sealed the deal and won the game for the garnet and gold.
Thompson led the team in kills with 18, contributing 20 points, followed by sophomore Brianna Barry (Winter Springs, Fla.) with 10 kills and 10.5 points.
The Seminoles’ next stop will be the west coast as they compete at the Long Beach State Invitational on September 7-8 in Long Beach, Calif. Florida State will match-up against Washington Friday and meet hosts Long Beach State on Saturday. Follow both games on GameTracker by logging onto www.seminoles.com.
