Florida State fell to undefeated Miami by a score of 3-2 (30-28, 30-25, 29-31, 30-32, 10-15) Friday, September 13th, at the Florida International Tournament held in Miami. The Seminoles jumped out to an early two-game lead on the Hurricanes, but dropped the final three to lose the match. With the loss, Florida State falls to 3-3 on the season while Miami improves to 8-0.
Leading the way for the Seminoles in the loss was senior outside hitter Alex Sevillano. Sevillano notched a double-double as she recorded 28 kills and 17 digs against the Hurricanes. The senior hit .393 in the match and served one service ace. Erica Bunch performed well for Florida State as she notched 22 kills on 47 attacks and four errors to record a hitting percentage of .383. Middle hitter Dawn Hough hit .357 as she tallied six kills on 14 attacks and one error. Junior Jennifer Anderson recorded a season-high 67 assists against Miami. Freshman Jennifer Orlowski led the team in digs as she had 18.
Three Miami players recorded double-doubles to lead the ‘Canes past Florida State. Senior Marcela Gamarra led Miami as she recorded 23 kills, 16 digs, two solo blocks and one service ace. Elizabeth Tyson led the Hurricanes in hitting percentage as she hit .396 with 27 kills on 48 attacks and eight errors. Tyson also recorded 15 digs and three aces in the match. Valeria Tipiana tallied 15 kills on 41 attacks and had five errors to hit .244 for Miami. Tipiana also notched 13 digs.
The Seminoles will return to action Friday afternoon when they take on the Golden Panthers of Florida International at 5:00 p.m. The match will be held at Golden Panther Arena on the campus of Florida International University.
