TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State volleyball team will take on the Bulls of the University of South Florida Friday, December 6th, at 5:00 p.m. in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament. The Seminoles will travel to Gainesville, Fla. to take part in the tournament regional. Florida State and South Florida will be joined by Central Florida and host University of Florida at the regional. The Gators and the Golden Knights are scheduled to face off Friday at 7:00 p.m. The winners of the two first round matches will play Saturday, December 7th, at 7:00 p.m.
Florida State last appeared in the NCAA tournament in 1998, after winning the ACC Championship. The tournament appearance was short-lived, however, as the Seminoles fell in the first round to Northern Illinois. Florida State will look to defeat South Florida and advance past the first round for only the second time in school history. The last time the Tribe advanced in the tournament was in 1993, when Florida State hosted a regional and defeated DePaul in the first round. Pacific defeated the Seminoles in the second round.
The Seminoles will face a familiar foe in the first round of the tournament, as they will take on the USF Bulls. Florida State fell to the Bulls earlier in this season by a score of 3-2 (30-23 28-30, 28-30, 30-27, 4-15).
In the October 29th match against South Florida, the Seminoles were led by senior opposite Kristin Frye. Frye recorded a double double with 20 kills, 15 digs, six block assists and a hitting percentage of .417. Senior outside hitter Alex Sevillano also turned in a strong performance against the Bulls, as she had 18 kills, 13 digs and hit .277 for the Seminoles. Erica Bunch notched double-digit kills with 14. Junior setter Jennifer Anderson had a team-high 59 assists against South Florida.
South Florida was led by Michelle Collier, as she notched a match-high 23 kills and 20 digs. Collier also had six service aces, one block assist and a hitting percentage of .156. Shameka Mitchell performed well for the Bulls, recording 11 kills, five block assists and a hitting percentage of .304. Jolene Patton was a force against the Seminoles, as she tallied 14 kills, 11 digs, two block assists and hit .200. Ale Domingos had a double double for the Bulls. Domingos had a match-high 63 assists, 11 digs, five kills and two block assists.
