SECOND HALF NOTES

 

Seminole Quick Hits

* The loss for Florida State on Saturday was the fifth straight to the Gators as the Seminoles fell to 19-32-2 all-time.  The 30-point margin of victory for the Gators marked the largest victory for Florida in Tallahassee.

 

* Florida’s 45 points on Saturday are the most points scored by the Gators in Tallahassee during the Bobby Bowden era.  The previous high was 33 points in 1976. The 45 points are also the most points scored all-time in the series in Tallahassee surpassing the previous mark of 42 points in 1972. 

 

* Florida State’s third quarter touchdown on Jermaine Thomas’ four yard run was the first TD scored by the Seminoles against the Gators since Drew Weatherford’s 25-yard pass to Greg Carr in 2006, a span covering 111 minutes, 43 seconds.

 

* Weatherford’s 42-yard pass completion to Jarmon Fortson in the third quarter was the longest pass completion of the game. Fortson’s catch surpassed his previous career long of 17 yards. The freshman wide receiver came into the game with six catches for 75 yards.

 

* The 45 points scored by Florida on Saturday marked the most points scored by an opponent in Tallahassee since November 15, 2003, when NC State tallied 44 points in a 50-44 double-overtime victory for the Seminoles.  It is the most points allowed in a loss at home since Miami defeated FSU 49-27 on October 13, 2001.

 

* Florida’s 317 yards on the ground were the most rushing yards allowed by the Seminole defense this year.  Georgia Tech held the previous high of 288 rushing yards on November 1, in a 31-28 Yellow Jacket victory.  The last time Florida State allowed more than 300 yards on the ground was September 9, 1995 when Clemson tallied 321 rushing yards in a 45-26 Florida State victory. 

 

Weatherford Becomes FSU All-Time Pass Attempt Leader

With Drew Weatherford’s first pass attempt in the third quarter of Saturday’s game against Florida, the senior quarterback set the school record for career pass attempts, surpassing Chris Weinke (1,107).  Weatherford holds the record for career pass attempts at 1,122.  Weatherford finished Saturday’s game 4-of-15 for 61 yards.

 

Garvin’s Moving On Up

Following his 22-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter, Michael Ray Garvin finished the game with five returns for 172 yards.  The senior specialist has now tallied 69 career kickoff returns for 1,650 total yards, just 54 yards shy of topping the all-time record at Florida State currently held by Keith Ross (1985-88) with 1,703.

 

FIRST HALF NOTES

 

Seminole Quick Hits

* Percy Harvin’s nine-yard touchdown run off the opening kickoff marked just the third time this season the Seminole defense has allowed the opposition to score a touchdown on the opponent’s first possession of the game.  The opposition has scored off their first possession in three of the last four games.

 

* The forced fumble by Derek Nicholson in the second quarter was his second of the season and third of his FSU career, while Neefy Moffett’s fumble recovery was his second this year and third in his career.

 

*Florida State has gone six-consecutive quarters without a touchdown when playing Florida.  The last time FSU scored a touchdown against the Gators was in the fourth quarter in the 2006 season on a Drew Weatherford 25-yard pass to Greg Carr.  The 21 points scored in the last two games against Florida have come in the first half and all 21 points have come courtesy of field goals.

 

* Florida’s 28 points in the first half are the most allowed by the Seminoles this season.  It marks the fifth time Florida State has gone into the locker room trailing at the half this year.  The Seminoles are 2-2 in games they trailed at the half in 2008.

 

* Florida’s 150 rushing yards in the first half is the fourth-highest total of any team against the Seminoles this season.  With 312 total yards going into the half, the Gators are the fifth opponent to record over 300 offensive yards against Florida State this year. 

 

* The last time Florida State allowed its opponent to score 28 points in the first half was September 9, 1989, when Clemson led the Seminoles 28-10 at the half on its way to a 34-23 victory in Tallahassee.       

 

Michael Ray Garvin

Garvin’s 63-yard kickoff return in the first quarter marked his 14th of the season and improved his total yards to 482 in 2008.  The senior specialist now has 65 career kickoff returns for 1,541 yards.

 

Gano’s Knows Field Goals

 

Gano’s 37-yard field goal in the first quarter and his 36-yard and 32-yard field goals in the second marked the 22nd, 23rd and 24th successful attempts in 26 tries this season.  The senior place kicker is a perfect 11-for-11 between 30-39 yards and has not missed from a distance shorter than 50 yards as he is a perfect 19-for-19 on the year.
