TALLAHASSEE, Fla – Florida State (7-5) and High Point (4-6) will meet for the first time in school history when the two schools square-off in a two-game mid-week series beginning Tuesday, March 10 at 6:00 p.m. inside Dick Howser Stadium.

High Point University marks the first of two, first time opponents the Seminoles will face in 2009. FSU has fared well when facing a team for the first time posting an all-time record of 174-45 (.795). The Garnet & Gold went 4-1 against first time opponents in 2008 sweeping a three-game series from Duquesne, while splitting two games against Bucknell in the NCAA Tournament.

HPU is coming off a 2008 season in which the Panthers posted an overall record of 20-33, while finishing fifth in the Big South with a mark of 9-12. High Point is one of two schools (Florida Gulf Coast) that Florida State is facing for the first time in the program’s 62 year history.

High Point visits Tallahassee having lost three in a row while posting an overall record of 4-6 in 2009. The Panthers opened Big South Conference play last weekend and were swept by Winthrop at home losing all three games by a combined seven runs. High Point is 0-2 on the road this season with losses against NC State (8-2) and Appalachian State (7-2). Florida State marks the third ACC team that High Point has faced this year as the Panthers fell to NC State and beat Duke (10-2). Leading the offensive charge for the Panthers is senior catcher Billy Alvino who is hitting .400 in 10 starts. Bill Manion and Kyle Mahoney have each reached double-digit RBI with 12 and 10, respectively. Defensively, High Point is fielding .980 as a team committing just eight errors in 10 games. On the mound, the Panthers’ staff ERA sits at 4.35. Sophomore right hander Mike Caldwell, who will start on Tuesday, has been responsible for half of High Point’s wins in 2009.

Just 12 games into the 2009 schedule, Florida State still faces 16 games vs. non-conference foes including two more games against teams from the Big South Conference (two vs. UNC Asheville). Florida State has posted an all-time record of 67-2 against current teams from the Big South as the Seminoles have posted undefeated records against Charleston Southern (17-0), VMI (14-0), Coastal Carolina (11-0) and Liberty (2-0). Along with High Point, FSU has never faced Gardner-Webb, Radford and Presbyterian. The other two schools the Seminoles have faced are UNC Asheville (19-1) and Winthrop (4-1). FSU and UNC Asheville have squared-off in each of the last three seasons and four out of the last five. The Seminoles have won 10 straight over the Bulldogs.
