Florida State vs. Team Nike

Leonard Hamilton, Head Coach
Florida State University

“Obviously, this was a game of two different halves. As a coach sometimes you wonder how you do all the things to prevent your team from going out and having a start to any game like that. The only thing positive I can say about the first half is that I’m glad we got it out of our system. It will be a nice tape for our guys to evaluate of how not to do things.

“We gave up 11 uncontested 3-pointers in the first half and they hit nine of them. That’s not characteristic of teams that we have coached. It won’t be a characteristic of this team.

“On a positive note, I thought we came back and played the second half with a little bit more energy. We were a little smarter with the ball. I was a little disappointed with how we executed our offense. We didn’t want to call any plays or run any sets in the first half but we ran a few in the second half. We wanted them to play out of the transition but we couldn’t get enough stops in the first half to get out and get into transition.

“The second half was a different story. We generated some offense from our defense. We felt a little better about ourselves but it’s obvious that we still have a long way to go.

“We have a pretty good passing team and believe it or not, we are a pretty good perimeter shooting team. We just didn’t shoot the ball well in the first half. I think as you go through the process of developing a mentality for your team, there are a lot of things you have to learn. If you are going to be a good team, you have to earn the right to win and you have to earn the right to be successful. We are going through that process. I think we just did not come out with that focus that will allow us to be successful.

“{In the second half we moved the ball, made the extra pass, got the ball inside, attacked the rim and got to the free throw line a few more times. That’s somewhat close to the way we want to play.

“I feel that we are probably ready to start the season. But we still have an awful lot of areas that we need to improve upon. We have to become more consistent with our execution. We are trying to work in a lot or new guys into the system. We think we still have to win games by committee. I think you all know we are going to play hard. We are going to play good defense hard and we are going to give good effort. Tonight was not one of those games. Hopefully, the frame of mind that we got in tonight is that we can learn from. Sometimes it may be good early in the season to get a check like this. Fortunately for us it came in an exhibition game and not necessarily during a real game.”
