2014 ACC Champions

COLLEGE PARK, Md. ( – The No. 4 Florida State Seminoles (50-6) outlasted No. 20 Notre Dame (39-11) and defeated the Irish 3-1 to earn their 12th ACC Championship in program history on May 10 at Maryland Softball Stadium.

“I couldn’t be happier for this team,” said head coach Lonni Alameda. “This is something they have been working for ever since the season ended in Texas last year. Everyone has been putting in the work needed to be successful and have really come together as a family.

“Individual stats and accolades are nothing when it comes to what this team wants to accomplish as one unit. While we accomplished one goal today, we will stay focused on our NCAA postseason goals.”

Maddie O’Brien got things going right away in the bottom of the first as she drove her 23rd home run of the season over the wall in center. The solo shot tied an ACC Tournament record with three home runs in a single tournament.

Lacey Waldrop was perfect through the first 3.2 innings of the game before Notre Dame was finally able to get a base runner on a double by Emilee Koerner. Koerner would come in to score a batter later on a single to center by Katey Haus to tie the game at 1-1.

Those would be the only two hits Waldrop would allow until the top of the seventh when Koerner would knock a single up the middle to start off the inning. The Chester Va., native retired the next three batters and closed out the ACC Championship with a strikeout to Laura Winter.

Waldrop improved to 33-4 on the season allowing just three hits and one run in the complete game win. With her seven strikeouts, she now has 654 career strikeouts and moved into sole possession of ninth place on the FSU all-time list.

Notre Dame starter Winter (27-5) settled in after allowing O’Brien’s home run in the first. She didn’t allow a base hit until the fourth inning when Florida State was able to take a 2-1 lead on back-to-back two-out singles by Bailey Schinella and Celeste Gomez.

Courtney Senas added a solo home run in the fifth to give the Seminoles the final 3-1 score.

Gomez was named tournament MVP and is joined on the 2014 ACC All-Tournament team by O’Brien, Waldrop, Tiffani Brown and Kelly Hensley.

No. 4 Florida State will now wait to see when they will play next as the 2014 NCAA Tournament field will be announced on May 11 at 10 p.m. on ESPNU. The top 16 seeds will host four-team regionals on May 15-18 at campus sites.
