Florida State Wins FGCU Classic

ESTERO, Fla. – The No. 1 Florida State men’s golf team finished out the fall season with a victory at the Homewood/Hilton Garden Airport & FGCU Classic at the Old Corkscrew Golf Club. The Seminoles had four players finish in the top 10.

With a 1-over 289 in the third round, the team finished the tournament with a 3-over 867. This is Florida State’s second win of the fall. The Seminoles won by 13 strokes over second place Florida and 28 strokes over third place St. Mary’s (Calif.).

“This win caps off a great week,” said head coach Trey Jones. “The guys were tired coming off a big win in Orlando but accepted and embraced the challenges. The character displayed by this team continues to impress. Traveling here allowed for the opportunity to better prepare our team for the National Championship which will be held at The Concession in Bradenton.”

With his third top 10 finish of the month, junior Hank Lebioda finished tied for second with an even par 216. Lebioda posted the best round of the day for the Seminoles with a 2-under 70 and led the field with 16 birdies.

“This tournament really tested what we all had left in us,” said Lebioda. “We could have easily gone out quietly but we hung tough, fought through and won this golf tournament. I’m really proud of the team and am excited about where we are heading this year.”

Sophomore Josh Lee had his best finish of his collegiate career as he also tied for second place with a 216. He finished tied for sixth at the beginning of the fall at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational. He and Lebioda finished two strokes back from first.

After finishing tied for third last week at the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, sophomore Jack Maguire finished tied for sixth with a 2-over 218 after turning in a 74 on Tuesday.

Junior Rowin Caron had his third top 10 finish of the fall as he finished eighth with a 3-over 219. Sophomore Anthony Alex finished the tournament tied for 21st with a 227.

“Our goal starting the fall each year is to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each player,” concluded Jones. “We then work on a development plan that will help them improve before we begin again in February. Finishing the fall with a 50-2 record should show these guys that they have an opportunity to be a really good golf team in May.”

The team is off until February when they travel to Gainesville to play in the Gator Invitational.
