TALLAHASSEE, FLA. – In their first ACC competition of the season, the Seminole softball team was victorious over North Carolina, 2-0, Saturday night on JoAnne Graf Field at the Seminole Softball Complex. Florida State improves to 8-4 while UNC moves to 10-3.
Taking the win for the Seminoles was sophomore Terese Gober who is now 4-3 this season, giving up just two hits and striking out seven Tar Heels.
“Terese did a really nice job tonight against UNC,” head coach JoAnne Graf said. “The energy in the dugout was really positive all night and I’m happy to get our first conference win this season.”
Leading FSU on offense was senior Whitney Buckmon who went 2-for-3 and got on base in all three at-bats. Buckmon, along with junior Jessica Gilmore, scored the Seminoles’ two runs off a double hit by senior Brittany Osmon in the bottom of the third.
Buckmon currently leads the ACC in stolen bases, adding one tonight to bring her total to eight this season. The centerfielder also leads the team with a .488 average and 20 hits.
Catcher Robin Ahrberg continues to improve, notching one hit against UNC and remaining second on the FSU squad with a .360 average.
Taking the loss for North Carolina was this week’s ACC Pitcher of the Week, Lisa Norris. Norris, now 4-2, allowed six hits, two earned runs and walked two against Florida State.
The Seminoles and Tar Heels go back-to-back on Sunday with a noon doubleheader. The last time FSU was able to sweep the weekend series with UNC was in 2004. Both games will be broadcast via live internet radio on Seminoles.com.
