TOLEDO, Ohio –
The Florida State University men’s golf team won its first team championship since 1998 as the Seminoles claimed the title of the Inverness Intercollegiate at the Inverness Club. The team championship was the first for the Seminoles since winning the U.S. Collegiate Championship during the spring of 1998. Seminole senior All-America Jonas Blixt finished in a tie for first place in the individual standings to earn the fourth individual championship of his collegiate career.
Florida State set a tournament record with its team total of 862. The previous record was held by South Carolina with 876 in 2000. Blixt and Ryan Brehm (Michigan State) also set a new individual record by shooting a three-under par 210. They are the first golfers to be under par in the seven-year history of the Inverness Intercollegiate.
Florida State, which is ranked 15th in the nation in the pre-season poll by Golf Week Magazine, took the lead late in the first round and held the top spot for most of the remainder of the event to wini the first team championship for Head Coach Trey Jones in his five-year career at Florida State. The win marks the fifth career championship for Jones and first since he led his Georgia State Panthers to the 2001 Trans Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament championship. The Seminoles defeated second place Michigan State by six strokes.
“To win a golf tournament agianst this quality of a field on a golf course that has held five major championships speaks highly of the talent and potential this team has,” said Jones. “This is a special group of young men that have an ablility to raise their game to a high level coming down down the stretch in a golf tournament. They really picked up where they left off at the end of last season when they were successful in both the NCAA Regional and the NCAA Championship.”
Blixt (Hammaro, Sweden) claimed his fourth career individual championship despite shooting a four-over par 75 in the third and final round. He entered the final round with a two stroke lead over Ryan Brehm of Michigan State. The pair finished the event tied with identical scores of 210 as Blixt carded a 75 in the final round and Brehm a 73. Both Blixt and Brehm began the final hole of the event tied and both players earned a birdie on the par four 18th hole to finish the match all square.
Junior All-America Matt Savage (Louisville, Ky.) finished in a tie for fifth place as he closed the event with a team-leading 71 in the third round. He moved from a tie for ninth place after two rounds to a tie for fifth in the final standings with his second score of even par or better in the tournament. Savage carded a three-under par 68 in the second round and finished with a 54-hole total of 214. He has now earned seven career top 10 finishes in 24 career events.
