Florida State Women Fare Well In First Day

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida State women’s tennis team got off
to a good start in the 2000 Lady Seminole Classic with six victories in
competition at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
In Singles Flight A, junior Alida Gallovits, who was seeded second,
defeated Georgia Southern’s Amy Bartlett 6-0, 6-4 and will face Edit Pakay
of Florida at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Singles Flight B No. 1 seed Christy
Denny, a freshman, defeated Jacksonville’s Tamara Kaftalovich 6-3, 6-1, and
will face Auburn’s Carolina Maurer at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Senior Marina
Raic defeated South Florida’s Ashlee Callahan in three sets, 6-3, 3-6 and
6-3 and will face Central Florida’s Julie Pecastaing at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
Junior Jessica Balbuena defeated South Florida’s Claudia Nieto 6-0, 6-1 and
will face Sara Robbins of Miami at 8 a.m. on Saturday. Senior Christy
Travis fell to Auburn’s Carolina Ramirez. In consolation play, Travis
defeated Brooke McNammee of Georgia Southern 6-1, 6-1 and will play
Stetson’s Claudia Meza on Saturday afternoon.
In doubles play, No. 3-seed Alida Gallovits and Jessica Balbuena
defeated Stetson’s Analia Longoni/ Lindsey Wyeth, 8-2. The duo will face
South Florida’s Tina Harrison/ Natalie Schwartz on Saturday. Marina Raic
and Chrisy Denny topped FAMU’s Rochelle Goldtreate/Dia Collins, 8-2, and
will take on FIU’s Anneliesse Rose/Marina Faustinelli on Saturday.
Action continues on Saturday with semifinal play with the finals
scheduled for Sunday.
