Florida State Women’s Golf Team In 12th Place At NCAA Women’s Central Regional Championship

May 9, 2008

AUSTIN, Texas – The Florida State University women’s golf team is in 12th place after two rounds of the NCAA Central Regional Championship at the University of Texas Golf Course. The Seminoles fell from seventh place after the first round to 12th place after the second round. The Seminoles need to move back into the top eight in the team standings to advance to the NCAA Championship May 20-24 at the University of New Mexico. The Seminoles will begin play in Saturday’s third and final round of the event only five strokes behind Nebraska who is currently the eighth place in the team standings.

Florida State is in 12th place and needs to move ahead of at least four teams currently in front of the Seminoles to advance. The Seminole are one stroke behind NC State and Kent State, two strokes behind LSU and five strokes behind Nebraska. The Seminoles are only nine strokes behind fifth placed Texas.

Seminole All-American Caroline Westrup is in a tie for seventh place in the individual standings after shooting a one-over par 73 in the second round. She has a two-day total of 143. For Westrup to advance as an individual for the second consecutive year she must be one of the top two ranking individual golfers not on one of the eight qualifying teams. Westrup is currently fourth among the potential individual qualifiers and is only two strokes behind each of those three players.

“Today just wasn’t our day but we are still in a pretty good position as we begin the final round,” said Head Coach Debbie Dillman. “The heat was incredible and we didn’t do as well as I thought we would. Despite that we have reached one of our goals to be playing in the morning round on Saturday and we are only five strokes out of qualifying for the championships. Our players think playing in the morning will benefit each one of them so we are excited about our chances.”

Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) was minus one under par after 13 holes and then ran into some tough breaks on the course. She double-bogeyed the 14th hole to move above par for the first time during the round, birdied the 15th hole and bogeyed the 17th hole. Westrup was plus two on the final five holes after playing the first 13 holes at minus one under par. Her score of 73 marked her first above par round in eight career regional rounds.

“I ran into some bad luck today,” said Westrup. “On my double, the ball was trapped under the edge of the green – we couldn’t event see the ball when we approached the green. That’s the game of golf; you have to play the ball as it lies. All I need to do it put those last five holes out of my mind and play tomorrow. Things are going pretty well without those holes.”

Senior Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) is in a tie for 32nd place in the individual standings with a two-round total of 150. She carded a 70 in the first round and an 80 in the second round. She, too, was playing well at three over par after 13 holes before losing five stokes over the final five holes of the afternoon.

Freshman Macarena Silva (Santiago, Silva) carded her second consecutive round of 78 in the second. She was playing well until the final six holes of the afternoon when she went from a strong score of plus three after 12 holes to a plus six at the close of the round. Silva unfortunately carded four bogeys in her final six holes. She is in a tie for 69th place with teammate Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) who carded a 76 in the second round for a two-day total of 156. Wright played her final 15 holes of the afternoon a one over par with 14 holes of par and only one bogey. Junior Lauren Cousart (Athens, Ga.) is in a tie for 95th place after carding on 81 in the second round.

Florida State will tee of Saturday morning at 9:00 and is paired with NC State and Kent State – two of the teams the Seminoles must move ahead of for it to achieve its goal of playing in the NCAA Championship finals for the third time in the last four seasons.
