The Florida State women’s golf team will face Florida in the first round of the NGCA Women’s Collegiate Match Play Championship at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando as the pairings for the event were announced by the National Golf Coaches Association. The Seminoles are the No. 7 seed and the Gators are the No. 10 seed in the 16-team match play tournament which runs Nov. 3-5.
Invitations to the Match Play were based on the 2006 national championship finish and seeds were determined based on fall 2006 results through October 17. The Seminoles finished in 16th place at the 2006 NCAA National Championship and are currently ranked 17 in the most recent GolfWeek Magazine rankings
The University of Georgia was named the top seed while Duke, the 2003 and 2004 Match Play Champion and 2005 National Champion, was placed as the second seed. The 2005 Match Play Champion, Purdue University, arrives back in Central Florida to defend their title as the eighth seed. The Bulldogs will face No. 16 seed Nebraska. The winner of this match faces the winner of Purdue and ninth-seeded Arkansas. To round out the top half of the bracket, fourth-seeded Vanderbilt faces No. 13 SMU and fifth-seeded Wake Forest tees off against No. 12 LSU.
In-state rivals No. 3 Auburn will match up against No. 14 Alabama and will advance to face the winner of a Pac-10/Big Ten clash between sixth-seeded Arizona and No. 11 Michigan State. Second-seed Duke competes against No. 15 South Carolina while Florida State and Florida square off in the most anticipated match of the first round. The winner of the Seminole/Gator match will face No. 2 seeded Duke.
The Seminoles are participating in the event for the first time and are one of three ACC teams in the event. Florida State is joined by No. 2 seed Duke and No. 5 seeded Wake Forest giving the ACC and the SEC three teams seeded among the top seven teams in the event.
