The Florida State women’s tennis team opened the season with a sweep of Florida A&M Saturday, January 18th. The Seminoles, led by junior Anca Dumitrescu, defeated the Rattlers by a score of 7-0. The victory against Florida A&M was the first for the Tribe in dual-match play this season.
Florida State earned the first point of the day as they took all three matches in doubles play. Dumitrescu and Daniela Gheorghe, playing at the No. 1 positon, defeated Dia Collins and Charlana Brown of Florida A&M by a score of 8-1. In No. 2 doubles, Amberly Tantee and Natalie Tirapelli overpowered Sahirah Williams and Asha Jaja of Florida A&M, 8-3. The Rattlers forfeited the No. 3 position.
After earning the first point in doubles, the Seminoles rolled to earn victories in the six singles matches. At the No. 1 position, Dumitrescu controlled the court as she defeated Brown by scores of 6-0, 6-0. Gheorghe picked up a win for Florida State at the No. 2 position, defeating Collins, 7-5, 6-0. Junior Brooke Cordell added a point to the Seminoles’ team score, as she defeated Williams, 6-0, 6-2 in No. 3 singles. At the No. 4 position, Tantee knocked off Jaja by scores of 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Alina Mihailescu had an extraordinary debut, defeating Monet Duncan, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 5 position. Florida A&M forfeited the No. 6 position.
The Seminoles will return to action Sunday, January 19th, when Florida State hosts Stetson at noon.
