Florida State Women’s Tennis Dominates Georgia Southern 7-0 For Third Straight Win

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team opened the 2003 season with two convincing wins against Florida A&M and Stetson. The Lady Seminoles swept both Stetson and FAMU 7-0. Saturday would be no different as the FSU women’s tennis team earned its third straight sweep in a 7-0 win over Georgia Southern. The women’s tennis team is now 3-0 on the year and has yet to lose a match in the 2003 season. The Seminoles were led by juniors Brooke Cordell and Christina Denny, who both won their matches 6-0, 6-0.


The Seminoles dominated doubles play as they swept the Golden Eagles to earn the first point of the day. In No. 1 doubles, junior Anca Dumitrescu and sophomore Daniela Gheorghe led the way for Florida State, as they proved to be too much for Stephanie Tyrell and Marion Levllier of GSU, 8-2. Amber Tantee and Cordell, played at the No. 2 position for the Seminoles, looked strong in defeating Callie Ward and Charlotte Bruneteaux by a score of 8-2. Florida State’s Meredith Fish and Beth Lawrence completed the doubles sweep over Karen Somm and Kim Wollet, 8-4.


After earning the first point of the day by sweeping the doubles matches, the Seminoles continued their stellar play singles action. Freshman, Alina Mihaelescu dominated at the No. 6 position in singles action, as she defeated Somm by scores of 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 2 position, sophomore Mihaela Moldovan defeated Levllier, 6-1, 6-0. Florida State’s Dumitrescu, held down the No. 1 position as she beat Tyrell 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 4 spot, Denny completely shut out Wollet, 6-0, 6-0 in her impressive win. Gheorghe worked the No. 3 position by downing Bruneteaux by scores of 6-2, 6-1. Cordell rounded out the singles competition as she made quick work of Ward, defeating her 6-0, 6-0.


The Seminoles will next play Central Florida on Sunday, January 26, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The match will start at 11:00 a.m.
