Florida State Women’s Tennis Edges Wake Forest, 4-3

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State women’s tennis team, currently ranked 45th in the nation, hosted 66th-ranked Wake Forest Saturday, March 22nd, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. The Seminoles fell behind early to the Demon Deacons, but mounted an impressive comeback to defeat their ACC foe by a score of 4-3. With the win, the Tribe improves to 11-5 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while Wake Forest falls to1-14 on the season and 0-3 in the ACC.


The Seminoles fell in two of three doubles matches, allowing the Demon Deacons to take the first point of the day. Florida State’s Amber Tantee and Daniela Gheorghe fell at the No. 1 position to Karin Coetzee and Aimee Smith by a score of 8-4. Brooke Cordell and Christina Denny, playing at the No. 3 position, tied the score in doubles play at one, as they knocked off Elizabeth Proctor and Sandie Knight, 8-4. Wake Forest clinched the doubles point, as Mihaela Moldovan and Beth Lawrence fell at the hands of Wake Forest’s Katie Martzolf and Danielle Schwartz by a score of 8-5.


Florida State, after falling in the doubles portion of the match, got off to a slow start in singles action, allowing Wake Forest to take an 3-1 lead. In No. 1 singles, Moldovan fell to 79th-ranked Coetzee of Wake Forest by scores of 6-3, 6-2. Florida State’s Alina Mihailescu, currently ranked 81st in the country, cut the Demon Deacons’ lead to one, as she knocked off Schwartz, 6-3, 6-3. Wake Forest quickly regained their two-point lead, as Gheorghe of Florida State was defeated by Proctor at the No. 4 position by scores of 6-7 (1), 5-7.


The Seminoles refused to lose and fought back from the two-point deficit. Junior Denny, playing at the No. 2 position, defeated Wake Forest’s Martzolf in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. In No. 3 singles, Anca Dumitrescu, ranked 53rd in the nation, returned to the court for the first time since late February and knocked off Smith of Wake Forest by scores of 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3). Florida State’s Cordell clinched the match for the Seminoles, as she defeated Knight at the No. 6 position, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5.


The Seminoles will return to action Sunday, March 23rd, when they host NC State at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 12:00 pm.
