Florida State Women’s Tennis Falls To 14th-Ranked South Alabama, 5-2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
The Florida State women’s tennis team hosted the 14th-ranked University of South Alabama Saturday, March 8th, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. After allowing the Jaguars to earn the first point of the day in doubles play, the Seminoles fell to South Alabama by a score of 5-2. With the loss, the Tribe falls to 9-4 on the season.


The Seminoles fell in two of three matches in the doubles portion of the match, which gave South Alabama the first point of the day. Florida State’s Beth Lawrence and Mihaela Moldovan earned the only Seminole victory in doubles action, as they defeated Andrea Kurekova and Dominika Nemcovicova at the No. 2 position by a score of 8-4. Amber Tantee and Daniela Gheorghe, playing in No. 1 doubles, fell to South Alabama’s Viktoria Stoklasova and Katarina Palenikova, 8-0. In No. 3 doubles, Brooke Cordell and Christina Denny were defeated by Klara Jarova and Marlieke Jager of South Alabama by a score of 8-3.


Florida State would face a tough challenge after allowing the Jaguars to earn the first point of the day in doubles action. Due to injury, Florida State’s Anca Dumitrescu, playing at the No. 1 position, retired from play, allowing South Alabama to take an early 2-0 lead. Florida State cut the Jaguar lead to one, as Moldovan knocked off Kurekova of South Alabama in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0. In No. 4 singles, Tantee was defeated by South Alabama’s Nemcovicova by scores of 6-0, 6-3. South Alabama clinched the match, as Florida State’s Cordell fell to Palenikova in No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Florida State’s Alina Mihailescu, playing at the No. 6 position, added a victory to the Seminole score, as she defeated Jarova of South Alabama by scores of 6-4, 6-4. In a battle on court three, Denny was defeated by South Alabama’s Jager, 6-4, 5-7, 10-6.


The Seminoles will return to action Monday, March 10th, when Florida State travels to Florida International to take on the Golden Panthers.
