TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State Lady Seminoles seven-match
winning streak came to a halt Wednesday afternoon at the Scott Speicher
Tennis Center in Tallahassee, Fla. The 19th-ranked Lady Seminoles dropped
a close 5-4 match to the 29th-ranked Lady Bears from Baylor University.
Florida State falls to 9-3 while Baylor improves to 8-1.
FSU got off to a quick 2-0 lead during the singles portion of the
match with wins by Kia Asberg at No. 3 and Ali Weber at No. 5. Asberg
extended her winning streak to nine matches while Weber won her third match
in a row. Losses by FSU’s Duxin and Gallovits tied the score at 2-2.
The two singles matches remaining at No. 4 and No. 6, went into
second set tiebreakers after FSU had won the first set in both matches.
Baylor was able to win both tiebreakers to remain alive in those respective
matches. At No. 4 singles, Baylor’s Karin Andersson won the third set 6-0
to put the Lady Bears up one. However, at No. 6 singles, FSU’s Marina Raic
evened the match at three by winning the third set 6-3. Raic improved to
8-4 on the season by winning her third consecutive match.
The deciding match came down to the No. 1 doubles position, where
FSU’s Alida Gallovits and Nanette Duxin battled Baylor’s Katia Kovac and
Vida Mulec. With the overall score 4-3 in favor of Baylor and FSU winning
on court No. 3, the match at No. 1 went into a tiebreaker. In the
tiebreaker, Baylor jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Gallovits served them within
5-2 but Kovac and Mulec took the last two points to clinch the match for
the Lady Bears.
Florida State will return to the courts to host No. 45 Tulane on
Thursday, March 9th at 11:00 a.m.
