The Florida State women’s tennis team traveled to Atlanta, Ga. Saturday, April 5th, to take on Georgia Tech at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The Seminoles earned victories in No. 1 and No. 2 singles, but it would not be enough, as the Yellow Jackets defeated the Tribe, 5-2. With the loss, Florida State falls to 13-8 overall and 3-4 in the conference, while Georgia Tech improves to 13-3 and 5-1 in the ACC.
The Seminoles earned a win at the No. 3 position in doubles action, but the Yellow Jackets won the doubles point, as they defeated Florida State in the other two matches. Florida State’s Brooke Cordell and Christina Denny, playing in No. 3 doubles, defeated Catherine Gunn and Maria Nieto by a score of 8-4. Anca Dumitrescu and Mihaela Moldovan fell in a battle at the No. 1 position to 34th-ranked Jaime Wong and Kelly Anderson of Georgia Tech, 9-7. Daniela Gheorghe and Amber Tantee were defeated by Georgia Tech’s Mysti Morris and Lyndsay Shosho in No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-1.
Dumitrescu and Moldovan earned big conference wins in singles action. Playing at the No. 1 position, 55th-ranked Dumitrescu defeated Georgia Tech’s Gunn, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-3. Florida State’s Moldovan, currently ranked 83rd in the nation, overpowered 118th-ranked Anderson by scores of 6-3, 6-1. Denny battled 70th-ranked Wong of Georgia Tech at the No. 3 position, but the Yellow Jacket was victorious by scores of 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. In No. 4 singles, Tantee of Florida State fell to Morris, 6-3, 6-1. Alina Mihailescu, playing at the No. 5 position, was defeated by Georgia Tech’s Shosho, 6-3, 6-1. Cordell took Sekita Grant to three sets, but could not hang on as Georgia Tech picked up the win in No. 6 singles, 5-7, 6-3, 10-2.
The Seminoles will return to action Sunday, April 6th, when they travel to Clemson, S.C. to take on the Clemson Tigers. The match is scheduled to start at noon.
