Greenville, SC. – Despite being delayed due to weather conditions, Florida State’s women’s tennis team was successful in their first day competing in singles. Six out of seven Seminoles moved past the quarterfinals, while sophomore Katie Rybakova hit winning points to put her in the consolation finals.
“We did a really good job of competing hard,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “I am really proud of the effort we put forth today. We did a really good job of hanging in there even though things were not really going our way.”
In the first flight, No. 24 Katie Rybakova fell to No. 72 ranked Laura Gioia of Furman 6-1, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Rybakova then defeated Rosalia Alda of Tennessee in the consolation semifinals 6-4, 7-6 (5). Rybakova will look to take the consolation finals tomorrow as she will be matched up with No. 23 Katrina Tsang of North Carolina.
In flight two, No. 53 Lauren Macfarlane earned her spot at the semifinals as she beat Keilly Ulery of Vanderbilt 1-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2. In her second stint of the day, Macfarlane fell to Monica Arguello of Furman 7-6 (3), 6-2. Macfarlane will look to bounce back tomorrow as she will face ACC rival Josipa Bek of Clemson.
In her match-up with Tennessee’s Maria Sorbello, Ania Rynarzewska was successful in the third flight of the day as she won 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Despite her win, Rynarzewska lost to Vanderbilt’s Jackie Wu 6-3, 7-5. Rynarzweska will match up with South Carolina’s Miki Jocic to compete for third place.
In the best match of the day, sophomore Federica Suess trumped No. 30 Samantha Murray of Northwestern 7-6, 6-2 at the quarterfinals of the fourth flight. The semifinals were no different as Suess was victorious against South Carolina’s Jelena Rajic, 6-0, 6-4. Suess will look to continue her wins as she will play Clemson’s Alex Luc.
Despite losing her first set, Jessica Sucupira claimed a victory in the fifth flight against North Carolina’s Meg Fanjoy, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the quarterfinals. Chelsea Preeg of Vanderbilt defeated Sucupira at the semifinals, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4. Sucupira will look to place third tomorrow as she faces Furman’s Susan Bitetti.
The sixth flight was no different as sophomore Bonny Davidson was also triumphant against Northwestern’s Keri Robinson, 7-6 (10-8), 3-6, 6-1. In spite of nerves playing a role in her first fall match with the Seminoles, Davidson stepped up again to win at the semifinals against Vanderbilt’s Erica Robertson, 6-1, 6-2. Davidson will play in the finals tomorrow against Tennesse’s Zsofia Zubor.
In her singles debut with Florida State, freshman Justine Humair was overpowered Furman’s Brooke Mosteller, 6-2, 6-4.
“We did a wonderful job of competing,” said Hyde. “The girls did a great job of demonstrating the kind of heart we have at Florida State.”
