Florida State Women’s Tennis Set To Play Two Matches Before Opening ACC Play

March 7, 2003

The Florida State women’s tennis team has only two non-conference matches left on its schedule, before opening ACC play at the end of the week. The Seminoles will host 14th-ranked South Alabama Saturday, March 8th, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida State University. The match is scheduled for a 11 am start. The Tribe will travel to Miami Monday, March 10th, to take on the Golden Panthers of Florida International in a 2:00 pm match.

The Seminoles, currently ranked 58th nationally, enter the match with a record of 9-3. The 9-3 start is the best since 2000, when the Tribe started the season 12-3 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Florida State is led by junior Anca Dumitrescu. Dumitrescu in singles action ranks 40th in the country. The Seminole pair of Dumitrescu and Daniela Gheorghe is the 43rd best doubles team in the nation.

Florida State leads the all-time series record against South Alabama and Florida International. Against the Jaguars, the Seminoles have an 8-6 advantage. Last season the Tribe fell to South Alabama on the road by a score of 4-3. The last time Florida State defeated the Jaguars was in 1999, when the Seminoles won 5-1. The Tribe also leads the all-time series against Florida International with a record of 10-2. The Golden Panthers defeated Florida State last season, 4-3. The Seminoles last defeated Florida International in 1999 by a score of 7-2.

South Alabama enters the match with a record of 9-2 and a national ranking of 14th. The Jaguars are led by Victoria Stoklasova, ranked 34th in the nation. The Jaguars’ two losses of the season came to nationally-ranked Clemson and top-ranked Florida.

Florida International is currently unranked and has a record of 3-7, but has faced tough competition this season. All seven losses come to ranked teams, including five losses to teams ranked in the top 25.

The Seminoles will return to Tallahassee Saturday, March 15th, when they host Virginia in their first ACC match of the season. The match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 am.
