March 5, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The 19th-ranked Florida State women’s tennis
team knocked off their third consecutive ranked opponent Sunday, with a 5-1
win over the 30th-ranked Miami Hurricanes. FSU lost just one singles match
en route to winning their seventh consecutive match. With the match
already clinched for FSU, the two teams opted not to play the doubles
portion of the match.

Florida State (9-2) started off quickly against the Canes (4-4),
Alida Gallovits and Marina Raic opened the scoring with decisive straight
set victories. FSU’s Kia Asberg, Ali Weber and Jessica Balbuena finished
the scoring for the Noles to give them their ninth win of the season.

Asberg increased her winning streak to eight with a 6-3, 6-2 win
over Miami’s Eva Jimenez at No. 4 singles. Asberg leads the team in wins
this dual match season with nine. Gallovits bounced back from a close loss
Saturday to defeat Miami’s No. 1 player, Alanna Broderick, 6-1, 6-2.
Gallovits, Raic and Duxin are all tied for second on the team in wins with
seven. Weber had the closest match of the day for Florida State, pulling
out the tightly-contested first set in a tiebreaker. Weber cruised in the
second set against Miami’s Lauren Scaglione to win her fifth match of the
dual season and the 85th of her FSU career.

The victory over Miami marked the fifth win of the season for FSU
over a ranked opponent. The Lady Seminoles have defeated five of the seven
ranked opponents they have competed against this season, with their only
losses coming to No. 4 Florida and No. 16 Vanderbilt. This coming week,
FSU will host two more ranked opponents, No. 29 Baylor on Wednesday at
11:00 a.m. and No. 45 Tulane on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Both matches will
be played at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the campus of Florida
State University.
