Tallahassee – The Florida State women’s tennis team started the 2003-04 season with a great start, playing at the Roberta Allison Fall Classic, Friday, October 3, 2003. On the first day of action, the Seminoles won all of their singles matches and seven of eight doubles matches. A total of 32 singles matches and 32 doubles matches were played among ten competing schools.
Juniors Daniella Gheorghe and Amberly Tantee paired up to defeat the Kelly/Presley team from Birmingham Southern University, 8-3. Senior Christina Denny and junior Natalie Tirapelli defeated the Southern University pair of Pontak/Pharr. Sophomore Alina Mihaelescu and senior transfer Nicole Cercone defeated Elsholz/Samson from the University of Alabama.
In singles action, Denny, Gheorghe, Tantee, Mihaelescu, Tirapelli and Cercone each won their singles match to advance to the second round. Newcomer Roxanne Clarke recorder her first college singles win defeating Sonja Nikolic from the University of Alabama, 6-1 and 6-3.
The Seminoles return to action for day two of the historical event continues today with the doubles finals at 8 a.m. and the second round of singles beginning at 11 a.m. Singles finals will be held Sunday morning at 8 a.m.
