TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Lady Seminoles are off to a strong start this season. After defeating FAMU earlier in the week, Florida State returned to action on Saturday as they defeated the Georgia Southern Lady Eagles, 7-0. The Lady Seminoles improve their record to 2-0 as they are set to play the No. 4 ranked Lady Commodores of Vanderbilt on Sunday.

It took less then a half an hour for FSU women’s team to win the doubles and the first point of the meeting. At the Number one position, Alida Gallovits and Jessica Balbuena defeated Amy Bartlett and Brooke McNamee from Georgia Southern 8-1. The number two doubles team, made of the tandem of Anca Dumitrescu and Amber Tantee, defeated Callie Ward and Charlotte Bruneteaux 8-0 shortly after. At the third position, FSU’s Christina Denny and Beth Lawrence defeated Sally Williams and Sarah Iqbal, 8-2.

The Lady Seminoles were extraordinary in singles play as they picked up six wins. Sophomore Denny led FSU as she won in No. 2 singles with a score of 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Meredith Fish was impressive on the day as well, as she defeated Ward in No. 5 singles by a score of 6-1, 6-0. After winning the first set impressively, Dumitrescu had to battle back to defeat Bartlett in No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Other winners for the Lady Seminoles included Lauren Walker, Balbuena and Lawrence.

“Everyone looked really sharp out there today and did the things they needed to do,” said FSU head coach Lise Gregory. “We talked about what it will take to beat Vanderbilt tomorrow and our players did those things today.”
