Tallahassee, Fla. – The Seminoles are certainly making a statement in their first competition of the season, taking home a championship in singles and doubles play on Saturday, September 30th at day two of the San Diego State Fall Tennis Classic held in San Diego, California.
Junior Tapiwa Marobela (Gaborone, Botswana) takes home the championship in the singles flight three. Marobela defeated San Diego State senior Yuki Hagiwara, 6-3 and 6-1. In doubles action, Marobela and Hagiwara were teamed up but just couldn’t hang in as Florida State’s Miranda Foley (Cambridge, England) and Jessica Wente (Whitehouse, Texas) defeated the pair 8-4. Foley and Ania Rynarzewska (Inowroclaw, Poland) also won in the singles compass draw matches, defeating. Foley defeated Alabama’s Paulina Bigos 6-3, 6-2 and Rynarzewska defeated SDSU’s Esther Cadua 6-0, 6-1. On Sunday, Seminoles’ doubles team Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) and Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) will play in the finals of the round robin bracket.
“Today we were able to win 13 out of 15 matches played and that’s making a statement,” Head Coach Jennifer Hyde stated. “This is a huge west coast event and has been a great start to the season for us.”
This event has been especially huge for senior Miranda Foley who had to redhirt last season due to a shoulder injury. “Foley is back in full swing right now. She’s grounded and focused and has her groove back,” Coach Hyde explained. “That’s big for her as she’s going into her senior year right now.”
As day two wrapped up, Coach Hyde is feeling good about the rest of the season. “This has been the best tournament appearance we’ve had since I’ve coached here. I’m feeling positive about the rest of the year, I’m not content just yet, but I’m very positive.”
The final day of the tournament is tomorrow, Sunday, October 1st, with the first matches starting at 11:00 a.m. EST.
