Florida State Women’s Tennis Wraps Up Successful ITA Southern Regional

Oct. 23, 2007

Athens, Ga. – Florida State completed a string of stellar performances at the ITA Southern Regional today, leaving a mark on the second-biggest women’s tennis event of the fall.

“Overall I think it was a very successful weekend,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “I don’t think we’re all playing our best tennis–which is to be expected at this point in the season–but we’re definitely making tremendous improvements. It was really just exciting to see the team come together as this tournament progressed. That’s another big piece of the puzzle that is going to help us get ready for the spring.”

Freshman Katie Rybakova led the way in making history for the Seminoles, battling through the singles “A” draw bracket. The Coral Springs, Fla. native took down three seeded opponents including Miami’s No. 4-seeded Laura Vallverdu and Georgia Tech’s No. 8-seeded Whitney McCray to become the only unseeded player in the final eight. Rybakova nearly made took down a fourth ranked opponent as well, jumping up on Georgia Tech’s No. 1-seeded Kristi Miller (ranked No. 5 in the country) 5-0 in the third set before falling 7-6 in the end.

Rybakova and sophomore Jessica Wente also made a strong run at the doubles “A” draw crown, falling short against the No. 1 seeded pairing in the quarterfinal match.

Fellow freshman Federica Suess toppled several opponents as the No. 1 seed in the “B” draw singles as well. Suess downed three in-state rivals from UCF and Stetson before topping the fifth-seeded Andrea Brenes of Alabama to advance to the final round of play.

Suess also had success in doubles play, pairing with junior Ania Rynarzewska for a 2-1 run into the semi-final match. Despite never having played together before, the pair of European natives backed up their third-place seed in the doubles “B” draw.

Senior Tapiwa Marobela had a big victory during the regional competition as well, overtaking Georgia’s No. 22-ranked Monika Dancevic in the first round of the consolation draw.

Florida State will take a weekend off now before hosting the final tournament of the fall, the FSU Invititational in Tallahassee, Fla., Nov. 2-4 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
