Greenville, SC- Florida State’s women’s tennis team concluded the Furman Fall Classic tournament on Sunday that included one flight championship and two third-place finishes. The 22nd Furman Fall Classic included a strong competition list that included Furman, ACC rival’s Clemson and North Carolina, and SEC’s Northwestern, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. In spite of being rain delayed for a day in singles matches, the Seminoles worked through it and came out with four victories in the last day of competition.
“Although we had a little bit of a slow start on Friday, we got back into the groove of things,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “The most important thing I was looking for is competing at a higher level. Everyone did a great job of that.”
In the first flight, No. 24 Katie Rybakova went up against No. 23 Katrina Tsang of North Carolina and finished on top with 7-5, 6-0 to place her at fifth.
Junior Lauren Macfarlane fell to Clemson’s Josipa Bek in the second flight with 6-1, 6-3. Macfarlane completed the tournament with a 1-2 record.
Senior Ania Rynarzewska also put up a fight and came out with the victory against Miki Jocic of South Carolina 5-7, 6-4 and 6-2. Overworking and outlasting her opponent, Rynarzewska finished the tournament in third place at the third flight.
The fourth flight showcased sophomore Federica Suess who was the only Seminole to finish 3-0 in the tournament. Suess matched-up against Alex Luc of Clemson at the flight championship in which she came out victorious with 6-3, 6-1.
Along with teammate Rynarzewska, Jessica Sucupira also finished her flight with a third place finish. Sucupira defeated Furman’s Susan Bitetti 6-1, 6-4.
In flight six, sophomore Bonny Davidson lost to Zsofia Zubor of Tennessee, 6-2, 6-1. Davidson along with Macfarlane finished the tournament with a 2-1 record.
Freshman Justine Humair defeated North Carolina’s Linzee Mabrey 6-4, 7-6 (1) to set her record for the tournament to 2-0.
“There were a lot of high points over the weekend,” Hyde said. “I have some things that we are going to work on. We look forward to hitting the courts on Tuesday and getting better. There are going to be some things we have to get better at to prepare us.”
