Florida State Wraps Up NCAA Competition, And Season

EUGENE, Ore. – Mario Lowe and the Florida State Seminoles’ track and field team wrapped up the 2001 season today, as Lowe competed in the triple jump as the Garnet and Gold’s final entry at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore.


Lowe ended the season with a 13th-place finish, hitting the sand with a mark of 51-04.25. The mark tied that of Erik Newby of the University of Florida. Lowe managed to finish seventh in his flight, which was led by Allen Simms of George Mason, who went 53-01.75. Walter Davis of LSU, the favorite entering the weekend’s competition, took the individual title with a mark of 54-04.00. Lowe hit his best mark, 15.65 meters, on his first jump of the day, finishing off his junior year with marks of 15.31m and 15.36m.


With seven athletes attending the 2001 NCAA Championships, Florida State put two points on the board and will return home with one All-American, junior Shawn Brown. The Seminoles finished the collegiate championships in 59th place.
