Florida State bound Clint Bowles has been keeping busy after signing a National Letter of Intent with the Seminoles men’s tennis team back in November. On Thursday, June 14 Bowles earned the 2007 USTA Florida Junior State Closed Championships at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach, FL. Ranked twelfth-seed in the tournament, Bowles was crowned champion in the Boys 18 and under division where he upset the number two seed Ryan Kim 7-5, 6-3.
“Being state champ means a lot to me,” Bowles said. “It will be with me forever and it will always be in the books.”
Bowles, a recent graduate from Florida Virtual School Class of 2007 talked about his key strategies to winning the championship without dropping a single set.
“Just believing in myself and having confidence,” Bowles said. “You have to always work hard.”
The soon-to-be Seminole signed a letter of intent with the Florida State in November 2006 to begin with the team in the 2007-08 season. Head coach Dwayne Hultquist expressed enthusiasm after hearing the news of Bowles’ victory.
“We are very excited for him to win his first state championship,” Hultquist said.
“This was definitely a confidence booster,” Bowles explained. “I’m very excited to play for Dwayne and Nick in the fall”.
The five-star blue-chip junior (www.tennisrecruiting.net) received a $1,250 travel reimbursement to be used later this summer at the 2007 National Clay Court Championships.
