Florida State softball pitcher Leslie Malerich (3-0) was named ACC pitcher of the week in the first round of honors for the 2001 season. Malerich, a junior from Merrillville, IN, went 2-0 in this weekend’s Tomahawk Bash Tournament including a seven-inning complete game victory to give the Seminoles the tournament title.
Malerich pitched two complete games, gave up three runs, of which only one was earned, allowed just seven hits and struck out 15 batters. The junior limited Florida International University to just two runs after they entered the game averaging almost 6 runs per game. She also sent the Golden Panthers to their first defeat in nine games this season.
She also pitched a complete game in a 4-1 win over Tennessee-Chattanooga Saturday afternoon. Malerich allowed only one unearned run and retired 19 of the 22 hitters she faced. She struck out six Moc batters and posted a 0.50 ERA for the weekend. This marks the seventh time Malerich has been named ACC Pitcher of the Week in the last two seasons.
