GREENSBORO, N.C. – Florida State junior Ytai Abougzir went 2-0 in singles play and helped the Seminoles to a win over a top-5 team last week, earning Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Performer of the Week accolades. Today marks the second straight week the Seminoles took home ACC “Performer of the Week” honors.
Abougzir, ranked No. 103 in singles play, earned a pair of singles upsets on the week. In Florida State’s narrow, 4-3 loss to No. 20 Notre Dame on Tuesday, Abougzir did his part with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over No. 13 Stephen Bass at No. 1 singles. He and Chris Westerhof, who form the No. 29 doubles tandem in the country, also downed Ryan Keckley and Sheeva Parbhu at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, to clinch the point.
In a 4-3 win over No. 5 Clemson on Saturday, Abougzir topped No. 81 Sander Koning, 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 singles as Florida State snapped the Tigers’ 13-match win streak.
The Seminoles (9-8, 2-1 ACC) return to the courts on Friday, March 24, at Maryland. The match is set to begin at 3 p.m.
