April 20, 2007

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
On Thursday, April 19 Florida State men’s tennis senior and co-captain Ytai Abougzir was named to the 2007 Men’s Tennis ACC All-Conference Team. This is Abougzir’s (Boca Raton, Fla.) second time in his career named to the All-ACC team also receiving the honors in 2006.

“It’s very exciting,” Abougzir said. “I’ve been putting in a lot of work and it has really paid off. You work hard every day and hope to get some kind of an award and this is a bigger one.”

Holding singles position one for the Seminoles, Abougzir has earned five ranked wins in the 2007 dual-match season including wins over Richard Wire (STAN), Andre Begemann (PEP), Ben Harknett (Rice), Arvid Puranen (VT) and Nick Cavaday (NCSU). Abougzir ends the regular season with a 9-12 singles mark and 4-7 in the ACC. Currently ranked 67 in the latest ITA/FILA.

“I was glad to see he made the team and I think he’s definitely deserving of it,” head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. “This is something he can always look back at and be proud of, especially making the team two years in a row.”

Florida State captured a round one victory on Thursday afternoon over No. 11 seed Maryland before Abougzir was able to complete a three set match with the Terps’ Nicolas Frassinoux 6-4, 1-6, 5-2. Florida State defeated Maryland 4-0 to move on to round two where the Seminoles will take on the No. 3 seed Duke Blue Devils.

The league also handed out its specialty awards to Miami’s Luigi D’Agord who was named Player of the Year, while Chris Kearney of North Carolina earned the ACC Rookie of the Year. The Tar Heels head Sam Paul was also awarded Coach of the Year.
