Football Holds Second Scrimmage

Aug. 16, 2000

Tallahassee, Fla. — The Florida State football team held its
second full scrimmage of the preseason this afternoon at Doak Campbell
Stadium. After going through a short kicking practice in the morning,
the team began scrimmage number two at 5:00 p.m.

Like the first scrimmage, the offense again made an impressive
showing. Senior quarterback Chris Weinke led all passers, completing
nine-of-14 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Marcus Outzen
followed with 142 yards on seven-for-15 passing. Marvin Minnis was the
top receiver with 137 yards on five catches and a pair of scores.

“The offense did well,” said head coach Bobby Bowden. “What
you’ve got is excellent throwing without a pass rush. Our passers are
good enough to take advantage of it. I just hope everybody makes some
improvement from today.”

Freshman Chris Rix got a chance to work with the second team
offense and led them to an opening touchdown. Rix hit Minnis on a
36-yard touchdown pass on the initial drive and finished the day
nine-of-15 for 120 yards.

“Rix did a good job,” said Bowden. “We’ve never had a freshman
quarterback take the second team offense down the field and score on the
first team defense on the first drive of the scrimmage.”

Rix was the top rusher, carrying three times for 42 yards
followed by Davy Ford’s 35 yards on five carries.

Nick Maddox was responsible for the offense’s third touchdown, a
24-yard TD throw from Weinke. Robert Morgan, Atrews Bell and Anquan
Boldin added three catches each.

Senior cornerback Clevan Thomas recorded the only interception
of the day for the defense, picking off an Outzen pass and returning it
20 yards.

The kicking game was perfect in the scrimmage with Brett
Cimorelli and Matt Munyon each going two-for-two on field goal attempts.
Cimorelli connected on field goals of 39 and 28 yards while Munyon was
good from 40 and 19 yards out.

Injury report: LB Brian Allen (high right ankle sprain), LB
Kendyll Pope (left groin strain), LB Jean Jeune (mild concussion) and DT
Randy Wilkins (mild concussion). QB Jared Jones was held out of the
scrimmage with a right shoulder impingement.

The team will meet Thursday morning and go through a short
inside walk through before returning to the practice field at 5:50 p.m.
The final scrimmage of the preseason will be held Friday evening.
