Football Scrimmage Cut Short by Inclement Weather

Aug. 19, 1998

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The No. 2 ranked Florida State Seminoles continued
preparation for their August 31st opener against No. 14 Texas A&M with two
practices today. The team used the morning session to work on the kicking
game and scrimmaged for a little more than an hour during the afternoon
until weather forced the coaches to cut the scrimmage short.

“The defense dominated pretty good today,” said head coach Bobby Bowden.
“Our biggest concern is protecting the passer. The defense bottled us (the
offense) up pretty good today. The offensive line has a bunch of guys hurt
and Brett Williams went down right away today. He (Chris Weinke) is not
getting a chance to do the things we’d like to see him do.”

First-team quarterback Chris Weinke completed 5-of-11 passes for 80
yards, including a 33-yard touchdown strike to Peter Warrick in the endzone
on the last play of the scrimmage to conclude the one-minute offense drill.
It was the only scoring play of the scrimmage.

“We’re coming along,” said offensive coordinator Mark Richt. “I’m still
very optimistic about our offense. Weinke is coming along. For the most
part, I’m very pleased. He’s much farther along than any second year
quarterback I’ve had.”

Backup quarterback Marcus Outzen connected on 3-of-11 passes for 28 yards
and was intercepted once by cornerback Clevan Thomas. Freshman QB Jared
Jones attempted one incomplete pass.

The defense sacked Weinke and Outzen a total of six times in the
scrimmage. Jamal Reynolds led the way with two sacks, while Roland
Seymour, Tony Bryant, Bryne Malone and Theon Rackley each added one.
Seymour also broke up two passes. Defensive tackle Jerry Johnson,
cornerback Mario Edwards and rover Sean Key each also broke up a pass.

Running back Dee Feaster broke free for a 69-yard run to set up a 24-yard
field goal attempt by freshman Chance Gwaltney, which he missed wide left.

“It shows what Weinke can do if we give hime time,” commented Bowden when
asked about the No. 1 offense’s final drive. “It would have been
interesting to play the second half and see if the offense would click.”

PK Sebastian Janikowski sat out the day’s action, including the morning
kicking scrimmage, with jumper’s knee (right). CB Abdual Howard suffered a
left ankle sprain in the morning workout. Scrimmage Injury Report: OT
Brett Williams (left ankle sprain), WR Laveranues Coles (injured left
fourth finger – X-Rays tomorrow), LB Bobby Rhodes (right groin strain), DE
Tony Bryant (lower back strain) and Ron Dugans (right shoulder sprain).
