Football Team Returns to Practice Monday Afternoon

March 15, 2004

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State football team returned to practice Monday afternoon after taking last week off for spring break. The Seminoles are in their second of four weeks of spring practice. The team practiced for 28 periods (five minutes each) in shorts and wrapped up the day with 11-on-11 non-contact drills and conditioning.

“They all got back safely from the break,” said head coach Bobby Bowden. “We had a little bit longer practice today than we’ve been having. Wednesday we’ll go in full pads and do some scrimmaging.”

Bowden announced Monday the hiring of James Colzie as the new graduate assistant for the defense. Colzie played cornerback for Florida State from 1993-96 and replaces Kirby Smart, who took a full-time position at LSU earlier in the year.

“James Colzie is going to work with Mickey (Andrews) and the defensive backs,” said Bowden. “He’ll specifically work with the corners. He left a good job to come up here, but I think he sees the success some of the other GA’s have had. We’re glad to have him back.”

Colzie, a native of Miami, was an assistant coach at Florida International under head coach Don Strock.

“I’m happy to be back home,” said Colzie. “This is where I graduated and this is a place I’ll always call home. I watched every Florida State game so I know who is here and who has left. There are some different faces, but the teaching hasn’t changed. I’m happy to be back.”

Several former Seminoles were on hand for Monday’s practice including NFL Pro Bowlers Peter Boulware and Corey Simon.

Tuesday is pro day at Florida State and more than 100 NFL coaches and scouts are expected to be on hand for the testing. Pro day begins at 10:00 a.m. and concludes around 2:00 p.m. The group, which consists primarily of seniors from the 2003 team, will run the 40-yard dash at Mike Long Track at 12:00 noon weather permitting. The 40-yard dash is open to the media, but the other tests are closed.

The Seminoles return to practice Wednesday at 3:15 p.m. The team will work again Friday and then hold a scrimmage on Saturday.
