TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Former FSU women’s tennis player Nicola Slater(GBR) was awarded a wild card spot by the All England Club for Wimbledon in ladies doubles. Slater will pair up with Lisa Whybourn (GBR) for their first round match against Alize Cornet and Pauline Parmentier of France.
Slater and Whybourn are scheduled to play at 11:30 a.m. BST (British Summer Time) on court five at the All-England Club.
“Being awarded a spot in Wimbledon is a dream come true,” Slater said. “I couldn’t be more grateful. I’m looking forward to the opportunity and hope to use it as a springboard towards the rest of my future goals.”
Slater has notched a pair of doubles crowns this season, as she most recently won the title at the 75,000 Nottingham in Great Britain in May. Alongside Maria Sanchez (USA), the duo won four matches on the grass surface en route to the tournament win. The victory gave Slater a significant boost in the rankings, moving her up to No.184 in the world in doubles.
Earlier this year, Slater was also victorious while paired with CoCo Vandeweghe (USA) in the 50,000 Boyd Tinsley Classic in Charlottesville, Va. in April.
Slater played for Florida State from 2005-2007. During her two seasons as a Seminole, she put up a doubles record of39-26 and played the majority of those matches from court one. She achieved a career high ITA ranking at No.14 while playing alongside Carolin Walter in 2007.
