Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State’s women’s tennis squad gave the home crowd a climactic end to the three-day long Seminole Invitational as four players came away with championship titles in the tournament’s six singles draws.
“It was a great finish to a very busy weekend,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “It’s always good to have so much success, especially when you’re competing in front of a home crowd. Our goals at the beginning of this tournament were to win every flight that we were entered in, and we didn’t miss that goal by much.”
Freshman Katie Rybakova closed out the fall season with an impressive 10-2 singles record as she took the garnet draw crown over Georgia Tech’s Noelle Hickey in a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 battle. Seniors Carolin Walter and Tapiwa Marobela won the gold and white draws respectively. Walter defeated FIU’s Egle Petrauskaite 6-1, 5-7. 6-2 while Marobela defeated teammate Jessica Wente 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Lauren Macfarlane rounded out the Seminoles’ winning quartet, knocking out FIU’s Priscilla Castillo in a dominant 6-1, 6-0 match.
“It was great to see progress from our two sophomores following their injuries,” said Hyde. “Jessica came back three months after her injury and battled her way into the championships and Lauren came back from rolling her ankle a few weeks ago to win her bracket.”
In finishing the Seminole Invite, Florida State wrapped the fall season on a high note with an 18-3 singles record for the tournament. Overall, the Seminoles had a successful autumn as they finished 46-29 in singles play. Freshmen Rybakova and Federica Suess both showed promise as they led the team in victories, notching 10 each.
“There was some top-notch competition this weekend. There were some players and teams that really pushed us and that’s what we needed to get ready for the spring season ahead,” said Hyde.
The Seminoles will return to action in January, participating in the Hawaii Invitational Jan. 15 – 21 before starting the home season Jan. 26 versus Jacksonville University.
