Four Seminoles Named To All-ACC Academic Team

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Four members of the nationally ranked Florida State women’s golf team – juniors Matilda Castren and Lydia Gumm and sophomores Kim and Morgane Metraux – have been named to the 2016 All-ACC Academic team, as announced by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.  Florida State was joined by Duke as the only two teams in the ACC with at least four honorees on the prestigious list of academic and athletic standouts who earned success during the 2015-16 golf season.

It marked the second consecutive year each of these four Seminole golfers have been named to the All-ACC Academic Team.  A program-high six Seminole golfers were named to the team last year with the four selections this year marking the fourth time in program history at least four Seminoles have been named to the All-ACC Team.  Since the ACC began naming an academic team for the sport of women’s golf in 2006, at least three Seminoles have been named to the team each year.

Florida State finished in 15th place at the NCAA Championship Finals and in second place at the NCAA Shoal Creek Regional Championship this past season.  The Seminoles’ 15th place finish at the NCAA Championship Finals was the highest under sixth-year head coach Amy Bond and the Seminoles’ highest finish since 2010 when they finished in 10th place at the NCAA finals.  The Seminoles earned nine top five team finishes in 13 events including team championships at the Florida State Match-Up during the spring season and the Jacksonville Classic during the fall season.

“To be named to the All-ACC Academic team is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Bond.  The academic success of our entire team is a great sense of pride to our players and everybody in our program knows how much it means to our administration and our university.  Being recognized academically by the ACC is an honor we all work hard to achieve every year and is one the highlights of the year for our entire team.”

Castren, Gumm, Kim and Morgan Metraux are now members of a group of 12 select Seminoles who have been named to the All-ACC Academic Team multiple times during their careers.  Four-time All-American Caroline Westrup (2006-09) was named to the team a program-record four times while Whitney Brummett (2006-08), Laure Castelain (2012-14), Macarena Silva (2009-11) and Hannah Thomson (2010-12) all earned the honor three times during their careers.

Castren and Kim Metraux are members of a select group of 10 who earned All-ACC and All-ACC Academic honors.  The two Seminoles are included on the prestigious list with Celine Boutier (Duke), Talia Campbell (Wake Forest), Virginia Elena Carta (Duke), Sandy Choi (Duke), Daniella Darquea (Miami), Alice Hewson (Clemson), Leona Maguire (Duke) and Laura Restrepo (Louisville).

Castren and Kim Metraux are two of only five players in the ACC who earned All-ACC Academic team honors, All-ACC honors and who also earned All-NCAA regional championship honors.
Miami’s Darquea was named the ACC Women’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
