Tallahassee, FL –
It seems like it was just a few weeks ago the fourth-ranked Seminole softball team was making its run to the semifinals of the 2002 Women’s College World Series. Just four months after its magical trip to Oklahoma City, OK, FSU is ready to open up its fall schedule Sunday and has released its schedule for the 2003 season.

The Seminoles have already begun preparations for 2003 and will get their first taste of live action at the Seminole Softball Complex this weekend. The Tribe will play three games Sunday against the University of West Florida (11:00 a.m.), Manatee Community College (1:00 p.m.) and North Florida Community College (5:00 p.m.).

“These games will give us the opportunity to get an early look at where we are at against someone other than ourselves in practice,” said head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf. “Our girls have worked extremely hard individually during the summer and as a team so far this fall. It will be nice to get a look at the progress they have made.

“We will have four teams all from the state of Florida competing at our complex. It is a great opportunity for people who love softball to be able to come out and see some games in an informal setting.”

Besides Florida State’s three games, there will also be two other contests between the traveling schools at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. All five games will be played at the Seminole Softball Complex on the campus of Florida State University.

Florida State’s only other fall game will take place Sunday, October 13. The Seminoles will play a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. versus Chipola Community College. That game will also take place in Tallahassee at the Seminole Softball Complex.

The Seminoles start their spring season on the road Saturday, February 1, 2003 when they travel to Statesboro, GA to face Georgia Southern. The team’s 2003 schedule will be one of the toughest in the history of the program. Florida State travels to the two most prestigious and competitive college tournaments in the nation next year, The first is the NFCA Lead Off Classic in Columbus, GA February 21-23. The second is the Kia Classic in Fullerton, CA March 12-16. This is the second-consecutive season FSU has been invited to the Kia and last season FSU advanced to the semifinals of the tournament.

“Those are two great tournaments and they will be huge tests for this team,” said Graf. “Our girls responded last year at the Kia defeating three highly-ranked teams and getting to the semifinals. With the addition of the Lead Off Classic to the schedule, we will get a real good idea of where we stand just six weeks into the season.”

In addition to those two tournaments, Florida State will once again travel to the Buzz Classic and will also take part in the North Carolina Invitational Tournament. The Seminoles will host five tournaments in Tallahassee, including the 2003 ACC Championships, bringing the grand total to nine tournaments next year before NCAA Tournament play begins.

One of the highlights of the 2002 schedule will be when the Auburn Tigers come to town Tuesday, September 4. The Tigers were part of the 2002 NCAA Tallahassee Regional and are coached by former FSU player Tina Deese. Florida State travels to Gainesville this season where they will face the Gators April 23 in a doubleheader slated for a 4:00 p.m. start.
