Freeman’s ACC Honor Puts Her in Elite Company

Oct. 29, 2012

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Standout senior middle blocker Sareea Freeman earned her third career Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Player of the Week honor on Monday following superb performances over Florida, Virginia and Virginia Tech this past week.

The honor for Freeman puts her in elite company at Florida State. The Fresno, Calif. native is just the third Seminole volleyball player to be named ACC Player or Co-Player of the Week three times in her career. She joins former all-conference middle hitters Aisha Thornton (1996-99) and Norisha Campbell (1998-01) on the prestigious list.

Freeman was a guiding force in Florida State’s tremendous three-match week, as the Seminoles defeated then-No. 11 Florida, Virginia and Virginia Tech in straight sets. Freeman combined to lead the Seminoles with 24 kills, 2.67 kills per set and a .455 hitting percentage in the week, elevating Florida State to a No. 11 AVCA ranking and a No. 9 spot in the latest NCAA ratings percentage index.

“She’s clearly our go-to player,” head coach Chris Poole said. “We saw it toward the end of last season when she started coming around and she’s picked it back up her senior year. It’s very satisfying for us because she is someone who came in as a bit of a project player and was a little under-recruited. She has come in and done an outstanding job and our middle blockers coach Holly Watts has really worked well with her.”

Although Freeman is second nationally with a .455 hitting percentage, the three-time conference player of the week leads all middle blockers in the category. During Florida State’s current 15-match win streak, she has posted 139 kills and a .451 attack percentage.

Through several spurts in Florida State’s week, Freeman came through many times. One of her biggest contributions was being responsible for three of Florida State’s last five points against Florida that sealed the match, recording three kills late in the third set. The victory snapped a 21-match losing streak to the Gators that began in the 1995 season.

Freeman has made her senior season a memorable one so far. In 19 of Florida State’s 23 matches played, she has recorded double-digit attacks. In 11 of her double-digit attack performances, she has amassed hitting percentages of .500 or better.

The Seminoles have now been honored by the ACC four times this season for player of the week awards. The total ties a single-season school record since joining the ACC in 1992, with the 1998 team also having an ACC Player of the Week on four occasions.

The conference-leading Seminoles face an important road weekend against the third and fourth-place teams in the ACC in North Carolina and NC State, respectively. Florida State and NC State play on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. on ESPN3.com. The Seminoles and Tar Heels then play on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 5 p.m. in a match that also streams on ESPN3.com.
